Spartan Parks Pty. Ltd.
This business was born out of appreciation and love for calisthenics, otherwise referred to as ‘street workouts’ in today’s world, as well as the severe lack of publicly available, low maintenance exercise equipment in the Northern Territory.
The practice of calisthenics originated in ancient Greece, first entering the historical record at around 480 B.C. with Herodotus’ account of the Battle of Thermopolae. Herodotus reported that prior to the battle, the god-king Xerxes sent a scout party to spy on his Spartan enemies. The scouts informed Xerxes that the Spartans under the leadership of King Leonidas were practicing some kind of bizarre, synchronised movements akin to a tribal dance. It turns out their tribal dance was not a superstitious ritual but a form of calisthenics by which they were building physical and mental strength before going into battle.
The word calisthenics comes from the ancient Greek words kalos (κάλλος), which means “beauty” (to emphasize the aesthetic pleasure that derives from the perfection of the human body), and sthenos (σθένος), meaning “strength” (greater mental strength, courage and perseverance).
Calisthenics is the art of using one’s body weight for resistance as means to develop one’s overall physique allowing muscle groups to work together rather than independently of each other similarly to sports such as swimming, gymnastics, rowing, or running.
